I do wonder if I am a reincarnate of sorts. As a child, I loved writing to pen pals. I grew up sorting cards and old mail at my grandmother’s house to the PostMan Books and now a grown up letter book.

Engaging in intelligent conversations about books and about their lives, Hanff became emotionally invested crsos the lives of the Marks and Company family. I was in my mid-thirties, she was nearing 70, I had a family, she was alone and fiercely independent. Thus begins a beautiful friendship.
Honestly, I can no longer imagine a world without the existence of this little peculiar and hopeful family. Letters, books and quips crossed the ocean from until and a friendship flourished as I first read 84, Charing Cross Road back in the 70s. It starts with her letter in response to the advertising which says the book shop deals in antiquarian books.
Hams, tinned food of varying kinds including tongueboxed eggs, chocolate, raisins and so on. By chance, Hanff’s upstairs neighbors are British, and they give her the name of Marks and Co. It’s snort-out-loud funny and therefore NOT such a good choice for reading in public waiting areas ; a clash of cultures between the two countries separated by a common language. We had a common friend and my pen friend always read my letter.

Letters and conversation about books- the beauty of them, the written words, the jokes- this is a book lover’s dream. They read all the best sellers, they get through them as fast as possible, I think they skip a lot. I’ll have mine till the day I die – and die happy in the knowledge that I’m leaving it behind for someone else to love.
I love reading letters. A charming tale which was lovely to read, from days gone by.
The letters span a twenty year period, which is incredible in nanff if one thinks about it. But she often stated that she was not rich. We would henceforth have no permanent record of most of our written communication.
Yet, opposites though we were, we shared some common threads in our lives.
